Free Internet in the City Centre

Free internet access will soon be available to residents and tourists in the central area of Bijeljina.

Specifically, the signal will cover the most frequented locations — the area in front of the City Administration building, the central city square up to the Court building, and the first section of Patriarch Pavle Street, covering a total area of 16,000 square metres.

In the previous period, the City of Bijeljina successfully passed the selection process under a public call within the WiFi4WB initiative, funded by the European Union and the Government of Germany, and implemented by GIZ (Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) – the German Agency for International Cooperation. In Republika Srpska, this organisation represents a key partner in the implementation of development projects focused on modernisation of public administration, energy efficiency, economic development, and environmental protection. It also finances and supports projects aimed at improving institutional efficiency and local community infrastructure.

The WiFi4WB initiative aims to enhance digital connectivity in local communities through the establishment of free Wi-Fi zones.

Filip Božić from the Mayor’s Office noted that, following the completion of the public call and the selection process, GIZ conducted a tender procedure for the selection of an internet service provider, in which the company “Mtel” was chosen.

Explaining further details of the project, Božić emphasised that the City of Bijeljina will become the owner of the complete technical equipment required for the establishment of the Wi-Fi network.

“The project includes financing of the installation, provision of internet services, and maintenance over a period of two years. After that period, the City will support the continuation of internet service provision,” Božić stated, adding that such a project represents a step forward towards a more digitally connected and accessible Bijeljina, bringing the city closer to the standards of larger European cities.
