Mayor Petrović and Greek Ambassador opened Greek Corner

Mayor Ljubiša Petrović and the Greek Ambassador to BaH, His Excellency Mr. Dimitrios Papandreou, opened the Greek Corner during a symposium held today at the University Sinergija.

Today’s gathering was an opportunity to start a new cooperation. Bijeljina is now a starting point of the expansion of Serbian-Greek friendship.

While addressing the participants, Mayor Ljubiša Petrović said that connections between our two peoples should be emphasized all the time in order for the young generations to continue actions for strengthening these connections in the future.

- Centuries of fight for freedom, solidarity and mutual understanding are an excellent foundation for cooperation in the time ahead which will not be without challenges. It is clear that the Greeks and Serbs are directed at each other in the Balkans, and I am sure that both peoples will be wise and use our friendship so we could be stronger and more successful together – said Petrović.

He pointed out that it is a great honour for our city and for the University Sinergija to welcome the Greek Ambassador, and that the Greek Corner is going to be a place of gathering and cooperation between cultural and educational workers, as well as businessmen from the two countries, so that we would show that the state borders dividing cities and people should be as thin as possible.

- By opening the Greek Corner we further develop our friendship, and contribute to our brotherly and friendly cooperation even more. As a socially responsible community, the City of Bijeljina is going to repay to the Greek people for their sincere friendship – said Petrović.

He also said that today’s meeting with the Greek Ambassador was an opportunity to initiate twinning with one of Greek cities, in order to, among other things, organise student exchange, support cooperation in other areas, such as tourism, culture, education.

- When we connect through these areas of cooperation, these connections are unbreakable both in peacetime and during periods of great challenges. We have witnessed that during hard times of the nineties, and during sufferings of the World War I, the relationship between Serbs and Greeks has been one of friendship. It is up to us to cherish this friendship and to develop it – Mayor Petrović pointed out.
