Bijeljina - Leader in Local Sustainable Development in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 2024

The fourth annual Sustainable Development Week in Bosnia and Herzegovina has begun in Sarajevo. It is dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goals defined in the 2030 Agenda. This year's theme is titled “Accelerating Action for a Sustainable Future”.

The event that kicked off this week was the presentation of the “Award for Local Sustainable Development Leaders in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 2024”. Awards were given to municipalities and cities, recognizing local leaders for their commitment to sustainable practices, inclusive policies, and community resilience. The City of Bijeljina, led by Mayor Ljubiša Petrović, received the prestigious award as the “Leader City in Local Sustainable Development in Bosnia and Herzegovina for 2024”.

Additionally, the City of Bijeljina was awarded for implementing the “Integrated Approach to Social Inclusion” program, with the rationale highlighting Bijeljina's leadership in employing individuals from socially vulnerable categories as one of the reasons for the award.

The Sustainable Development Goals Monitoring Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina hosted the event, supported by the “Framework for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals as a Foundation for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth in Bosnia and Herzegovina” program.

The program is funded by Sweden and implemented by UNDP, in partnership with UNICEF and UN Women in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with coordination by the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator.
