Position

Position

Bijeljina is an urban town and local governance unit of the same name, with the status of a city, located in northeast of the Republic of Srpska and BiH. The area of the City territory is 734 km2 and it encompasses Semberija plain which transforms into the hills of Majevica Mountain towards the south. The City of Bijeljina is located at confluence of the Drina River into Sava, and these two rivers represent northern and eastern boundaries of the City towards Mačva and Srem valleys.

Drina and Sava are state border lines with Serbia and Croatia, and the City centre is approx. six kilometres away from the border with Serbia and approx. 40 kilometres from the Croatian border. Neighbouring municipalities are Lopare, Ugljevik and Zvornik, as well as Brčko District.
Bijeljina is, due to its geo-political position, a cross-point of roads leading from the west of Republic Srpska towards Serbia, as well as those leading from the eastern part of Republic Srpska and southern part of BiH towards northern Serbia and further towards the Pannonian Basin and Central Europe.
The City of Bijeljina has a population of approx. 115,000, which makes it the second largest city in Republic Srpska in terms of population.

 GEOSTRATEGIC POSITION

The city of Bijeljina is located at an attractive geostrategic site - at the tripoint of Serbia, Croatia and Republic Srpska i.e. BiH, and at crossroads between major urban and industrial centres - Belgrade, Novi Sad, Indjija, Banja Luka, Šabac, Tuzla, Sarajevo... At the distance of approx. thirty kilometres from Bijeljina, there is a connection to Pan-European Corridor 10, i.e. motorway E-70 Belgrade-Zagreb. This route is the shortest connection of Semberija with these two cities and, through them, with western/central Europe and southeast of Balkan Peninsula.
Within the territory of the City, there are two border crossings towards Serbia over the rivers Sava and Drina (Rača and Pavlović Bridge), which are the busiest crossings for traffic from west and south of Republic Srpska and BiH towards northern Serbia and Belgrade. In Gornje Crnjelovo, there is a ferry border crossing for local border traffic with Serbia.
